What is a Sign Language Interpreter?
A Sign Language Interpreter is a professional who facilitates communication between Deaf individuals who use sign language and hearing individuals who do not.
Sign language is not universal—each country and Deaf community has its own unique sign language. For example, in Malta, the Deaf community uses Maltese Sign Language (Lingwa tas-Sinjali Maltija, or LSM). Similarly, Deaf communities in other countries, such as the UK and the USA, use British Sign Language (BSL) and American Sign Language (ASL), respectively.
Sign Language Interpreters work in a wide range of settings, wherever Deaf individuals are present. Their typical workweek may include interpreting in educational, workplace, healthcare, legal, recreational, and community contexts.
